No redemption without sin, as luck would have it.

Joker Heath Ledger.c.jpgA scene from Christopher Noland's addition to the Batman franchise, "The Dark Knight," with Heath Ledger pushing a frightening, psychotic version of the Joker.

Dza Dza.pngOn a busy street in Russia, a pair of level-headed comrads stop to humor a nut-case and wind up zapping themselves to another planet. It's a miserable place. All gray sky and empty sand. Ah well. Some drifters in a crappy, beat-to-shit conveyance pass by and they bum a ride. As the endless desert drifts below, they learn the ropes: stay calm, scrounge around and grovel. In the gulag-esque economy, worthless commodities--like matches--figure big. Their only hope of getting home is their dwindling supply. They keep smoking anyway. It's wry social commentary wrapped up as science fiction.

Julliette Lewis 11.pngJuliette Lewis, extra slutty, just the way you like her. Tricked out for a scene in the film, Strange Days, Juliette slinks into a hot, live version of "Hardly Wait," a song just begging to be treated dirty.

In this scene from Fitzcarraldo, the natives argue about the legend of the "White Devil." In reality, as we learn in the documentary, My Best Fiend the chief is proposing to off Klaus Kinski, an actor they've grown to loath.

The fallout of heightened security is glimpsed in this alarming animation by David Scharf. In the name of safety, surveillance techniques proposed or in effect in the US and the UK threaten to erode the very freedoms they were designed to protect.

The Brothers Quay, twisted twins of stop-motion animation, give a dark, sketchy nod to The Epic of Gilgamesh, perhaps the oldest known work of literature, in This Unnameable Little Broom.

Insightful review of "This Unnameable Little Broom," the inscrutable, stop-action animation from the Brothers Quay.
